OVERVIEW

Samsung LPU9D Lifestyle - Projector Reviews - Images
The LPU9D is Samsung's second generation flagship projector in The Premiere line of UST projectors.

Samsung highlights color and contrast performance as key features of The Premiere LPU9D. The LPU9D uses a high-quality RGB triple laser light source, considered by many to be among the best due to its exceptional color accuracy. Each primary color (red, green, blue) has a dedicated laser, resulting in incredibly accurate color reproduction, a wide color gamut, and vibrant, lifelike images. The LPU9D’s laser light source offers a significantly wider color gamut than blue laser phosphor, LED, and lamp light sources.

Samsung states that The Premiere LPU9D can accurately reproduce 154% of the DCI-P3 color volume and most of the BT.2020 color space, exceeding the performance of even the most advanced flat-panel televisions. This color depth allows the LPU9D to faithfully reproduce content encoded in multiple color standards, including REC.709 and DCI-P3, delivering a truly immersive viewing experience.

Contrast is also crucial. High contrast ratios, even without HDR, create deeper blacks and brighter whites for more impactful images. Add HDR, and the projector's contrast performance should be better than SDR. HDR allows for a broader range of brightness levels, enhancing contrast and displaying images with deeper blacks, brighter whites, and more shades in between. This makes dark scenes lifelike and immersive, while bright scenes retain detail.

The LPU9D supports HDR10+, an advanced HDR format. HDR10+ shares advantages with Dolby Vision, including dynamic metadata for scene-by-scene picture adjustment. Both are backward compatible with HDR10 and HLG content. A key advantage of HDR10+ is its royalty-free nature, encouraging wider adoption. Developed by Samsung and Amazon, HDR10+ is an open standard, unlike Dolby Vision, which requires licensing fees.

Samsung LPU9D AI Upscaling - Projector Reviews - Images
Samsung employs advanced AI upscaling to make non 4K content look as good as possible.

The Samsung Premiere LPU9D projector boasts an impressive 3,450 ISO lumens, making it bright enough to utilize on 100 to 130 inche screens in rooms with low to moderate ambient light. This projector is designed for living rooms and similar spaces. Ultra-short throw projectors like the LPU9D often replace traditional flat-panel televisions and must perform well in spaces with some uncontrolled ambient light. The Premiere LPU9D's ultra-bright RGB laser light source delivers enough brightness to produce high-quality visuals, with excellent detail helping you create a movie theater in your home.

The Premiere LPU9D utilizes Samsung's AI upscaling technology. This technology employs artificial intelligence to enhance the display of lower-resolution content, improving the quality of upscaled images projected in 4K.

The Premiere LPU9D's design closely resembles its 2022 predecessor, maintaining the sleek, minimalist aesthetic that distinguishes it from most ultra-short throw projectors.

Measuring 21.7 x 5.6 x 15.1 inches (551.1 x 142.2 x 383.5 mm) and weighing 25 lbs (11.3 kg), the LPU9D is visually appealing. Its modern, flowing design blends acrylic and cloth, creating a standout look.  The white color adds to its appeal, especially with the prevalence of gray and black ultra-short throw projectors.  Following a typical UST projector design, the LPU9D features a single physical power button on the rear input/connection panel rather than the top, front, or sides.

The projector boasts a quick startup, taking approximately 20 seconds from OFF and 10 seconds from STANDBY.

Samsung LPU9D Inputs & Connections - Projector Reviews - Images

Samsung includes three (3) HDMI ports on the projector's rear that support HDMI 2.0 features. HDMI input 1 supports Enhanced Audio Return (eARC) functionality. This projector's DLP chip only supports up to 4K@60Hz video playback. The Premiere LPU9D can also control connected devices, such as an A/V receiver, via HDMI Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) to control each connected device.

The Premiere LPU9D has the following inputs and connections from left to right on the rear panel.

  1. A built-in microphone on/off switch
  2. S/PDIF (Digital Audio) connector
  3. USB 2.0 Type-A (5V, 0.5A) connection
  4. Three (3) HDMI 2.0 ports (HDMI #1 eARC support)
  5. An RJ-45 wired LAN connection for networking
  6. Ex-link connection (For serial control devices, i.e., the projector, sound, and lighting)
  7. Infrared (IR) port
  8. AC plug port

The included remote is nice. It is slimmer than the typical Android TV or FireTV remote control but shares a similar yet not identical layout. This remote is the same one used on many Samsung televisions, including the Samsung FrameTV line of flat-panel displays.

This remote offers Bluetooth connectivity and voice control, enabling you to search, launch, and control the projector without requiring a line of sight. Samsung also included shortcut buttons on the remote for services such as Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, and Samsung TV Plus. Samsung includes a small solar panel on the remote's back, which allows it to recharge slowly from room light.

My only complaint about this remote control, especially considering The Premiere’s premium price, is that it does not have a built-in backlight for at least the most commonly used features.

Samsung LPU9D Lens - Projector Reviews - Images

The Premiere LPU9D's ultra-short throw lens system showcases Samsung's engineering expertise.  It projects a precise image just inches away from the screen at a steep angle, a feat difficult to achieve without optical distortions, and Samsung has executed it admirably.  The lens distributes light evenly across the screen, minimizing brightness variations and maintaining sharp focus, even in the corners. In addition, the lens displays a consistently bright and detailed image, avoiding common UST projector issues like uneven illumination and soft focus.

The Premiere also includes a convenient digital focus adjustment that is controllable via the remote. Supporting screen sizes range from 100 to 130 inches, giving the LPU9D flexibility for different room layouts.

The projector has manual and automatic keystone and multi-point geometric adjustments, facilitating quick setups. However, manual screen alignment is recommended for optimal image quality.  Keystone correction, whether automatic or manual, can compromise image fidelity, making the effort of manual alignment worthwhile for the most accurate and cinematic picture.

The Premiere LPU9D uses Samsung’s proprietary Tizen OS. Samsung is the leading manufacturer of Smart TVs, and Samsung leveraged this expertise to provide users with a comprehensive, smart TV experience. The LSP9T uses the same Tizen OS smart platform found in their newest flat-panel TVs. The smart operating system has been refined over several years, and it is utilized in over 190 million Samsung smart TVs. This system gives easy access to popular streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, HBO Max, and YouTube.

Tizen offers almost all the functionality you would expect on a flagship projector's menu system. You will find the menu nearly identical if you own a modern Samsung flat-panel display. If you are used to using Android TV or Google TV devices, you will quickly find that the layout is different but not difficult to figure out. Samsung Tizen OS and Google TV are operating systems for smart displays. Tizen is known for its clean and simple interface, which I found easy to navigate. It integrates well with Samsung's ecosystem, including smart home devices and other Samsung products.

PERFORMANCE

The test screen used in this review was a Da-Lite 110-inch, 16:9 aspect ratio Tensioned Designer Contour Electrol screen system using the company's ultra-white HD Progressive 1.1 screen surface designed for high-resolution video up to 16K.

The Tensioned Designer Contour Electrol screen system is excellent for environments where a traditional behind-the-wall installation is difficult. It offers all the benefits of an electric screen but with the flexibility of wire-free installation. The screen has a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery-powered motor that Da-Lite calls Agility.

The Premiere LPU9D offers good out-of-the-box color performance, demonstrating thoughtful factory tuning with a few minor exceptions. The projector's RGB laser light source is excellent, enabling the LPU9D to display a broad spectrum of colors—Samsung estimates it will cover as much as 154% of the DCI-P3 color space. Notably, the RGB laser light source avoids laser speckle and rainbow artifacts, issues sometimes associated with DLP projectors.

I loved how The Premier displayed animated content, as shown in the slideshow above, with the shots from Inside Out 2 and DC’s Creature Commandos. The colors of the LPU9D pop for sure, but without being completely oversaturated. If you want a more over-saturated look, select the STANDARD and the DYNAMIC modes for an extra color saturation kick.

While generally accurate, the color tuning of the preset picture modes, particularly FILMMAKER mode, leans towards a warm bias affecting elements like skin tones, which may appear unnaturally red or yellow depending on the content being viewed.

The Premiere LPU9D features several video calibration adjustments including a Color Management System(CMS) talong with 2 point and 20-point white balance adjustments.

For most people, the projector's out-of-the-box settings will be fine, but if you wish to tackle basic calibration yourself without getting into the projector color management tools, try making small or simple adjustments to your projector's BRIGHTNESS, CONTRAST, and SHARPNESS settings. Small adjustments to these basic settings will improve overall picture quality without paying for professional calibration.

To help, we have included several free test patterns on the Murideo website and their YouTube channel. Murideo also has detailed written instructions for using its test patterns in the resource section of its website. Also, check out our YouTube video on utilizing several test patterns called Optimize The Image of a Projector or TV Using Free Murideo Test Patterns.

The Premiere LPU9D projector offers multiple picture modes for SDR, including DYNAMIC, STANDARD, MOVIE, and FILMMAKER modes. Each mode presents unique characteristics in terms of color temperature and contrast.  The color gamut coverage of the projector is impressive, reaching 142% of DCI-P3 and exceeding 100% of Rec. 2020.

The LPU9 includes several preset picture modes. The DYNAMIC mode is notably cool, with an average color temperature of 10,749, while STANDARD mode is also cool at 9,246 but it looks good in rooms with warm ambient lighting. Initial measurements indicated that MOVIE and FILMMAKER modes were the most accurate picture modes, but their average color temperature was around 5,650, warmer than our target of 6,500K. Ultimately, MOVIE mode was chosen for calibration.

In FILMMAKER mode, which disables dynamic contrast capabilities, the sequential contrast was 1,299:1. We experimented with various picture modes and picture adjustments and a maximum achievable contrast ratio of 1,675:1, which is average for a Laser TV. The MOVIE mode brightness before calibration was approximately 138 nits, which is suitable for dim room use.

Pre-Calibration Color Tracking and Grayscale

Valerion VisionMaster Pro2 Calibration Results - Projector Reviews - Images

Initial measurements confirmed that the MOVIE or FILMMAKER mode was the most accurate for SDR. Ultimately, MOVIE mode was chosen for calibration.

MOVIE mode was warm out of the box, but Samsung provides numerous adjustments for precise picture tuning. The projector's 10 or 20-point white balance correction allows for easy correction of the warmer-than-desired MOVIE mode.

Before adjustment, the color temperature for MOVIE mode was 5,800, and the gamma was around 2.2 which is our target for a projector bring used in dimly lit living space.

Measurements showed that the Samsung Premiere's overall color tracking was commendable despite the under-saturation of blue and red in SDR. The projector uses a tri-laser light source, effectively avoiding oversaturation of brighter colors, a common issue with tri-laser-equipped laser TVs.

The peak luminance before calibration was approximately 138 nits, which is suitable for dim room use, although other projectors with similar manufacturer-rated brightness have been measured higher.

  • Picture Mode: MOVIE
  • Color Temperature: 6520K
  • Gamma: 2.2
  • Average Grayscale dE:
  • Average Color Tracking dE: 3.3

Post-Calibration Color Tracking and Grayscale

Valerion VisionMaster Pro2 Calibration Results - Projector Reviews - Images

The projector's measured gamma was close to our target of 2.2. The blacks appeared more dark gray than black but interestingly, the projector's brightness and contrast adjustments seemed non-responsive so they could be improved.

The projector offers several color temperature options, with Warm 2 being the most accurate. Out of the box, the THEATER mode color temperature was warm. The projector features 2-point and 20-point white balance adjustments. The projector 2pt White Balance adjustment to reduce the red gain brought the average color temperature closer to my target of 6500K.

Adjusting the white balance improved the projector’s color tracking, however magenta and cyan experienced slight shifts, resulting in a Delta error of about 3.3. These issues were correctable using the projector’s CMS adjustments.

After adjustment bright red and blue remained under-saturated. After adjustment, the average Color Tracking error hovered around 2.11. Increasing the color setting from 25 to 35 slightly improved saturation of brighter colors.

  • Picture Mode: MOVIE
  • Color Temperature: 6502K
  • Gamma: 2.2
  • Average Grayscale dE:
  • Average Color Tracking dE: 2.11

Although the White Balance and Color Tracking average Delta errors were below 3, more responsive adjustments would have allowed for finer tuning. The inability to adjust brightness or black levels resulted in elevated blacks, with the best solution being to reduce the shadow detail adjustment.

After adjustments, the peak lumens on a 100-inch screen were 120 nits, which is lower than most 3000+ ISO lumen projectors tested on the same screen. Switching to the DYNAMIC  mode with the color temperature set to Warm 2 will significantly improve brightness while maintaining a decent level of accuracy.

HDR White Balance Before and After Adjustments

Valerion VisionMaster Pro2 Calibration Results - Projector Reviews - Images

Whether you are viewing SDR or HDR, the preset picture shared common issues. For example, the VIVID and STANDARD modes are too warm, while the MOVIE and FILMMAKER modes are too cool. Like SDR, the most accurate HDR picture modes were MOVIE and FILMMAKER.

We replicated the same White Balance adjustments in HDR as in SDR, improving the color temperature. In HDR and SDR, when the MOVIE mode was adjusted to achieve a good white balance, bright color looked a little flat and lifeless unless you engage the projector's image enhancements settings.

While we normally turn off all of these adjustments, on the Samsung, it does make a noticeable improvement in the image on screen.

I found that the best balance between accuracy and a pleasing onscreen image was selecting MOVIE mode and switching the Active Tone Mapping to On and setting the  Contrast Enhancer to High.

The overall SDR and HDR performance of the Premiere LPU9D was good, but there were significant limitations in picture adjustments, which impacted overall color accuracy.

When set the the Dynamic picture mode, the Premiere LPU9D’s excellent RGB laser light source produces a bright image, making it enjoyable even in rooms with moderate amounts of uncontrolled ambient light. I conducted tests in two distinct environments to thoroughly evaluate the projector's uncontrolled ambient light performance.  First, I used my light-controlled lab, progressively introducing various light sources, including floor lamps, ceiling lights, and light from windows.

Then, I moved the projector to my living room, a space with no daytime light control beyond the gap-plagued wood blinds on the room's three large windows. The largest is a ten-foot wide, five-foot high bay window, which sits twelve feet directly across from my 120-inch ALR screen. This room is notoriously challenging for projectors, but The Premiere handled it remarkably well, proving its capability as a strong performer even with the lights on.

If you require even more brightness for situations where you are viewing “lights-on,” consider an Ambient Light-Rejecting (ALR) screen or an ALR screen with high gain.  impressive performance is likely due to a high-quality light source and the excellent Epson 120-inch ALR screen.

Samsung rates The Premiere LPU9D's top brightness at 3,450 ISO lumens max. To get a good idea of the projector's actual brightness capabilities, I set the projector to the brightest mode and took three to four readings about 15-20% out of the center of the lens.

The Premiere LPU9D measured 3140 ANSI lumens in the projector's brightest mode, DYNAMIC, with the projector's PEAK BRIGHTNESS mode turned on.

PEAK BRIGHTNESS helps overcome high amounts of uncontrolled ambient light sources, but this mode negatively impacts color accuracy. It also significantly raises the projector's black floor, making blacks look very gray. With PEAK BRIGHTNESS turned off, the DYNAMIC mode measures 1998 ANIS lumens, more than good enough to deliver a vibrant SDR or HDR image on screens from 100 to 130 inches in rooms with moderate amounts of uncontrolled ambient light sources.

The Premiere LPU9D delivers average out-of-the-box contrast, black level, and shadow detail, even for a DLP projector. However, its high-quality RGB laser light engine combined with effective image processing (including tone mapping, contrast enhancement, and shadow detail adjustments) allows users to improve dark area details at the cost of raising the projector's black floor.

As you can see in the slideshow above, I’ve selected content from a variety of films (Joker 2, Amazon Studio’s LOTR Rings of Power, Shazam - Power of the Gods, and the movie Passengers) that tend to be a challenge for any projector and The Premiere LPU9D handles it well.

Below are several examples of how the projector can crush blacks out of the box and the same shots after tweaking the projector's GAMMA and dark area detail settings.

STANDARD DYNAMIC RANGE & UPSCALING

For my evaluation of the LPU9D’s SDR performance, I used several pieces of non-HDR content, including two scenes from Lawrence of Arabia and My Super Ex-Girlfriend. The last two of the five slides below are in SDR and standard definition in order to put Samsung's AI Upscaling to the test.

The scenes from Lawrence of Arabia were displayed as I expected them to appear with some slight oversaturation of the colors which is typical of RGB laser DLP projectors. I have to give it to Samsung because they did not go overboard with the saturation, and I found it to be quite pleasant. They did a good job of color mapping down to the Rec.709 space utilized in SDR material. I would expect no less from a company like Samsung that has decades of experience with color processing on displays of all types.

The FILMMAKER mode is usually the most accurate out of the box but like my HDR content I preferred the look of the LPU9D’s STANDARD mode. MOVIE and FILMMAKER are tuned warm, making them look too yellow and red. More important was the excessive smoothing that these two modes applied to the image. It was too much  especially with the lower resolution content.

The LPU9D’s tendency to crush blacks out of the box was even more noticable in the lower resolution content where dark areas of the picture just appeared black-ish with little to no detail.

As far as the projectors upscaling, I didn’t think it was anything special. In fact I’ve seen better upscaling on projectors that don’t use AI to assist in upscaling to 4K.

The Premiere LPU9D includes the same four preset picture modes for HDR and SDR. The most color-accurate HDR modes are the MOVIE and FILMMAKER modes. However, I preferred watching HDR content in the projector’s STANDARD mode because using MOVIE or FILMMAKER mode results in a reduction in brightness and less saturated colors.

Other than the average black floor, The Premiere LPU9D shines when displaying details, especially in HDR10+ content like LOTR—The Rings of Power, Reacher, the new Alex Cross show on Amazon, and HDR10+ encoded UHD Blu-ray discs. It also does an excellent job displaying HDR10-encoded content.

I did have a curious issue. I first noticed it when playing movies encoded in Dolby Vision using MAX's onboard Tizen streaming application. Instead of defaulting to HDR processing with static metadata, the Premiere LPU9D just defaulted to SDR, bypassing any HDR processing. I got the same result when I plugged in an external streaming device that supports Dolby Vision.

When I viewed HDR-10+ content containing dynamic metadata, the Premiere LPU9D did an excellent job of automatically adjusting HDR tone mapping based on the movie or scene. The Samsung Premiere LPU9D supports HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma), the HDR standard for live broadcasts. Thus, you can enjoy the benefits of HDR when watching sports and award shows and any other content encoded in HLG.

GAMING

The projector's HDMI 2.0 inputs limit the Samsung The Premiere LPU9D's GAME mode. Samsung has tried to provide a good gaming experience by including features like AUTO LOW LATENCY mode (ALLM). Still, it's just a fact that this projector cannot offer the low lag high-speed gaming performance that many of its competitors offer on their ultra-short throw projectors like the Hisense PX3-PRO, AWOL Vision, and others.

The gaming experience is not comparable to projectors offering 120 Hz content compatibility. Despite the 0.66 DMD, the projector does not support 1440p 120 Hz, 1080p 120 Hz, or 1080p 240 Hz gaming.

The projector delivers responsive performance, especially for casual gaming and some FPS games. However, it is unsuitable for seriously competitive gamers who depend on super-fast response times between the press of a button and the corresponding action on the screen.

Samsung’s Game Hub is a nice attempt by the company to promote gaming without a console with compatibility with multiple online gaming solutions, including games from Xbox, Nvidia GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna, Utomik, Anstream Arcade, Blacknut Cloud Gaming, and Boosteroid. Using the Samsung Gaming Hub, you can subscribe directly to game-stream providers or log in using your credentials.

The Game Hub also features a Game Bar that provides games with a personalized gaming experience, saving your favorite settings in one place. Samsung has also included their AI AUTO GAME mode, which the company says will intelligently (using AI, of course) optimize the projector’s settings to match specific game genres, similar to BenQ gaming projectors.

SOUND QUALITY

Samsung LPU9D with Dolby Atmos - Projector Reviews - Images

The Samsung The Premiere LPU9D’s built-in sound outperforms most modern UST projectors I’ve reviewed. The Premiere LPU9D includes a robust built-in 2.2.2-channel speaker system with support for Dolby Atmos. It provides 40 W of power with up-firing speakers, built-in woofers, and Object Tracking Sound (OTS), which I found to be remarkably impressive, and I think you will, too. What this translates to is true soundbar performance, not an entry-level soundbar. The LPU9D gets loud at 100% with more bass than I’ve ever heard from a UST projector, along with incredible imaging.

The projector includes two preset audio modes, STANDARD and AMPLIFY, which is far less than most projectors offer. However, Samsung has provided an adjustable Seven (7) band EQ (only available in STANDARD sound setting) and the ability to toggle Dolby Atmos on and off in the SOUND menus EXPERT section. Dolby Atmos content supports Dolby Vision and DTS X, which help create an immersive soundstage even with the limitations of the sound system being built into the Premiere LPU9D’s chassis.

The projector's expanded soundstage is incredibly useful for movies alone, but it adds a whole new level of enjoyment when gaming. It adds an immersion element to titles like Fortnight, a range of driving games, and First-Person Shooters.

The Samsung Premiere LPU9D supports eARC, allowing higher audio bitrates and more audio channels when connecting an external surround system. It also transmits audio and video signals to compatible external audio devices over a single HDMI cable.

We don't measure noise level, but the Samsung The Premiere LPU9D’s cooling fans are only audible when the sound is low.

SUMMARY

Samsung LPU9D Projector - Projector Reviews - Images

The Premiere LPU9D is a flagship ultra-short throw projector that produces one of the better pictures available in this category. One of the main reasons for this projector's excellent picture quality is the RGB laser light source that Samsung uses to drive the projector. The LPU9D can produce 154% of the DCI-P3 color space and a large part of the BT.2020 color space. Additionally, it does it without any of the typical drawbacks of many triple laser projectors. Most notably, there is a complete lack of laser speckle and rainbow effect.

For those users who want to push the performance of this projector to the next level, and we suggest that you do so, Samsung includes a robust color management system that allows a professional calibrator to fine-tune the projector image with pinpoint accuracy. Another big reason this projector produces such a watchable picture, even in rooms with uncontrolled ambient light sources, is its Samsung-rated 3,450 ISO lumens of brightness, which translates to 3,140 ANSI lumens in my testing.

Samsung LPU9D Blacks & Shadows - Projector Reviews - Images

Samsung’s choice of a larger 0.66-inch DLP imager does not seem to have provided the expected bump in black levels I’ve come to expect from projectors using these bigger DLP chips. Blacks are, at best, slightly above average but far less than I expected from a flagship projector, which costs almost twice the price of a Hisense PX3-PRO and many other competitors. This projector's black floor is not on par with more expensive JVC and Sony LcOS or UST projectors from Hisense and Nexigo.

Unfortunately, the LPU9D maxes out at 60 Hz for all resolutions. The projector does not support 1440@120 Hz gaming or any refresh rate higher than 60 Hz, even at 1080p. The LPU9D has a noticeably slower performance even when compared to the previous generation of Hisense UST projectors. Still, I’m of two minds when criticizing Samsung’s gaming performance because they don’t advertise the LPU9D as a dedicated gaming projector.

Samsung does not claim to have dedicated gaming projector speeds; in fact, they stress that this projector is about console-free stream-based gaming. Unfortunately it comes down to expectations based on pricing. This projector costs almost twice as much as other flagship competitors, and for that price, I don’t think it’s unfair to expect at least competitive gaming performance from its competition.

Samsung LPU9D SDR Mode - Projector Reviews - Images

The Premiere LPU9D uses Samsung’s very capable Tizen smart TV OS, providing users access to various streaming, gaming, and productivity apps. Tizen is not as robust as operating systems like Google TV. Tizen has far fewer applications, but it does support all the major streaming services and shares some advanced functionality with Google TV, like searching across installed applications. Google TV supports over 10,000 applications. The Samsung Tizen OS does not come close to that. Samsung says this makes the OS more focused and streamlined, but I did not notice that it took fewer steps to navigate the OS or adjust the projector's functions.

Regarding HDR performance, Samsung supports HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG but does not support the popular Dolby Vision HDR format.

The Premiere LPU9D does a fantastic job displaying SDR content, which is good because most content available today is still unavailable in HDR. In addition, it does an excellent job upscaling both standard-definition and high-definition content to display at 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160p) resolution.

COMPETITIVE COMPARISON

Hisense PX3-PRO $3,499 MSRP

The Hisense PX3-PRO projector's out-of-the-box color performance is one of the best I've seen in the UST projectors released in 2024. The PX3-PRO’s new LPU's Trichroma laser light source and optics offer a level of alignment that I've never seen on any RGB laser light source projector. Only small amounts of color fringing are visible, and only when sitting very close to the screen. While Samsung's color capabilities are certainly in the ballpark with the Hisense, the PX3-PRO is the clear winner out of the box.

Both the PX3-PRO and the Samsung LPU9D offer High-dynamic-range (HDR) content support. However, since Samsung does not support Dolby Vision, but Hisense supports IMAX, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+, I recommend Hisense over Samsung.

Based on my recollection and the observations made by Phil Jones and myself when calibrating the PX3-PRO, the Samsung offers a lower black floor than the PX3-PRO. Still, the Hisense has a noticeable edge regarding dark area details, resulting in a more dynamic and immersive viewing experience.

The sound tuning on the PX3-PRO is very good, and the company collaborated with Harmon Kardon to develop its onboard sound system. The internal amplifiers have been boosted to 50 watts. While the Hisense onboard sound is better than any previous Hisense UST and most other USTs, it does not beat the Samsung onboard sound, which is the best I’ve heard in an ultra-short throw projector. Samsung offers high output with low distortion and great imaging, creating a very immersive simulated surround experience.

Regarding smart capabilities, both projectors offer smart OS solutions. Samsung uses its in-house Tizen OS, and Hisense runs the latest Google TV OS. Regarding core streaming applications, the Samsung and Hisense projectors are well-matched. However, I discovered that the Tizen AppleTV+ application allows users to access and purchase content from the Apple store directly from the application, a feature that I have not seen outside of Apple devices and is not available on Google TV’s version. That aside, Google TV offers users access to 10,000 applications from the Google Play store, which gives Hisense customers a far more robust app experience.

The Hisense is also smaller in all dimensions and lighter than the Samsung.  The biggest advantage of the Hisense is that it has a $3,499 MSRP and a more modern feature set featuring HDMI 2.1, IMAX, and Dolby Vision support. It also offers superior high-speed gaming with a low input lag of 18 ms at 4K/60Hz and support for 1080p 120 Hz gaming compared to Samsung's $5,999 MSRP.

AWOL VISION LTV-3500

The AWOL Vision LTV-3500 Pro, with its 4K resolution, laser light source, and 3,500 ANSI lumens brightness, is a formidable contender in the home theater projector market. At a current selling price of $5,499, it caters to a higher-end audience that prioritizes high-quality visuals and advanced features. The LTV-3500 Pro and The Premiere LPU9D share some flagship features but there are key differences.

AWOL Vision uses some of the industry's best suppliers for the projector's laser light engine components. The LTV-3500 Pro has a Texas Instruments 0.47 Digital Micromirror Device (DMD), a NICHA RGB laser diode light source, and a state-of-the-art Ricoh all-glass lens. Premium components, combined with great picture tuning, have resulted in performance that rivals any major projector manufacturer. According to Texas Instruments, Samsung uses a 0.66 DLP, which can produce better contrast, improved dark and highlight area details, and brightness compared to the equivalent 0.47 DMD.

AWOL Vision has always chosen the best components and tried incorporating the latest technologies, including Tri-Laser light sources, better optics, and features like Dolby Vision and HDR 10+. Samsung supports HDR10+ but does not support Dolby Vision content.

Regarding smart capabilities, only Samsung has an integrated smart OS solution with its Tizen OS. AWOL VISION has an onboard OS for controlling the projector's hardware, but all media applications run through an included Amazon Firestick 4K. The Firestick means that users must work on two different operating systems when using AWOL Vision, while Samsung offers a lean, fully integrated OS experience. Regarding the number of applications available, Amazon Firestick offers a larger library of applications than Samsung. Regarding premium streaming applications, the Samsung and AWOL VISION via the Amazon Firestick are well-matched.

The LTV-3500 Pro is designed to work seamlessly with various home installation control systems. PJ Link IP Control Protocol ensures integration with the most popular Smart Home systems like Control 4, Savant, URC, and Creston. The Samsung LPU9D also supports Control 4, Savant, URC, and Creston, but the level of control offered by each system varies significantly. Some systems provide basic power control and input switching, while others may offer more advanced features like source selection, picture adjustments, and even automated routines.

The Samsung Premiere LPU9D ultra-short throw projector aims to bring a cinematic feel to your living room.  Its vibrant 4K picture and impressive brightness, combined with the ultra-short throw design, make it a compelling option for those wanting a big screen without the usual projector hassles.  It handles moderately lit rooms well, which is great for casual viewing. The built-in speakers are a pleasant surprise, delivering decent audio, and the smart features make streaming a breeze.

However, the high price tag doesn't translate to a top-tier ultra-short throw experience.  The contrast and black levels aren't quite where they should be for the cost.  Samsung markets this as a casual gaming projector focused on cloud gaming, but even with that, it doesn't necessarily outperform other laser TVs in gaming performance.

While HDR10+ is a plus, the lack of Dolby Vision support is a significant oversight, considering how widely available Dolby Vision content is.  The absence of a built-in ATSC tuner and 3D support, which are common in competing projectors, further limits its ability to replace a traditional television fully.

The Premiere offers excellent build quality, Samsung solid operation and reliability. In short, the Premiere LPU9D offers a convenient big-screen solution, but the price, average contrast, and missing features compared to competitors like Hisense, AWOL Vision, and Nexigo—which offer similar or even better performance and features for significantly less—make it a tougher sell.  You need to weigh the Samsung brand's convenience against its competitors' better value proposition.

PROS

  • It produces a bright image with excellent uniformity. It can be used as a television replacement in most living rooms with small amounts of uncontrolled ambient light or with an ALR screen moderate amounts.
  • The on-board 40 W 2.2.2 channel speaker system is top-notch, getting loud with minimal distortion at the highest levels.
  • The projector supports HDR10+, providing support for dynamic metadata.
  • Despite its HDMI 2.0 inputs, the LPU9D supports some HDMI 2.1 features, such as AUTO LOW LATENCY Mode (ALLM), Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and HDR Dynamic Metadata (only for HDR10+ encoded content).
  • The Automatic and manual remote focusing works very well, creating an image with a uniform corner-to-corner focus.
  • The Samsung remote has a small built-in solar panel for slow charging on the remote's back panel.
  • The Tizen OS is easy to navigate and responsive.
  • The Apple TV application provides users access to the Apple store for movie and TV purchasing, a feature not available on Google TV’s Apple TV+ application.

CONS

  • There is no 3D support.
  • The Premiere does not support Dolby Vision, so this content gets processed as HDR10, which only has static metadata.
When playing Dolby Vision encoded content on the MAX streaming app the projector bypasses HDR processing and defaults to SDR.
  • While the LPU9D's white case makes it a visual standout from other brands, it also increases the amount of unwanted light that spills onto the screen from reflections.
  • This projector's $5,999 MSRP makes it pricey compared to other laser TV’s.
  • It does support 1080@120fps or 1080@240fps.
  • The remote control does not have a backlight.
