Samsung The Premiere 8K: The First 8K Association Certified Projector

All Industry News

Samsung has introduced The Premiere 8K, the world’s first projector to receive certification from the 8K Association (8KA). While more than 70 flatpanel displays models from major TV brands have already been certified, the The Premiere 8K will be the first projector that will bear the 8K Association Certified logo.

This achievement represents a major milestone in home entertainment, as the projector combines ultra-high-definition display technology with cutting-edge projector design. The Premiere 8K stands out as a flagship product, offering a glimpse into the future of home cinema.

8K Association Certification

The 8K Association is a global body dedicated to promoting and standardizing 8K technology. Products certified by the 8KA must meet rigorous criteria across multiple categories, including resolution, brightness, color gamut, HDR capabilities, and audio performance. The Premiere 8K’s certification highlights its adherence to these high standards, making it a pioneering product in the projection industry.

The primary distinction between 8K and 4K resolutions lies in pixel density. An 8K resolution of 7680 x 4320 contains four times the number of pixels as a 4K resolution of 3840 x 2160. This increase translates into finer details, greater sharpness, and enhanced image clarity, which is especially noticeable on larger displays.

Challenges in Building an 8K Projector

Few detail have been share about the DLP imaging system used in the The Premiere 8K but developing an 8K projector presents unique engineering challenges. The pixel density of the imaging chip must be four times higher than that of a native 4K panel.

The only native 4K resolution panels utilized are consumer projectors are LCOS units from JVC and Sony, which are already quite large and expensive. A native 8K LCOS panel with pixels the same size as a 4K panel would be much larger, resulting in a massive chassis, bigger lenses, and more power consumption.

Most consumer DLP projectors utilize native HD resolution DMD imagers and rely on aggressive pixel shifting to deliver 4K onscreen resolution. I am assuming that The Premiere 8K uses an advanced form of pixel shifting to display 8K onscreen resolution. Pixel shifting a native HD DLP chip to reproduce 8K onscreen resolution requires the DMD to move four times faster than when displaying 4K, which would be incredibly impressive.

Additionally, creating a compact ultra-short throw design with 8K resolution complicates the process further, as the precision required for alignment and focusing is far greater than with lower resolutions.

Lastly content availability also poses a challenge. While 8K content is growing, it remains limited compared to 4K, requiring advanced upscaling technologies to make lower-resolution content look as detailed as possible. The Premiere 8K addresses this through sophisticated image processing algorithms that enhance lower-resolution content to near-8K quality.

Features of The Premiere 8K

Samsung states that the Premiere 8K delivers an impressive 7680 x 4320 onscreen resolution, providing four times the pixel density of 4K projectors. This results in extraordinary detail, allowing viewers to experience lifelike clarity in everything from movies to live sports. The projector also features ultra-short throw (UST) technology, which enables it to project a 150-inch display from just inches away from the projection surface.

The use of advanced aspherical mirrors allows for precise image alignment while minimizing distortions. This design eliminates the need for complex installations or ceiling mounts, making it suitable for a variety of home setups. Furthermore, The Premiere 8K is equipped with a brightness level of up to 4,500 ISO Lumens, ensuring vivid and dynamic visuals even in brightly lit rooms. High dynamic range (HDR) support enhances contrast and color accuracy, further elevating the viewing experience.

The Premiere 8K is the first projector to include wireless 8K connectivity, streamlining the process of accessing high-resolution content. In addition, Samsung’s wireless One Connect Box simplifies the setup, reducing cable clutter and maintaining a clean look in the living space. This innovation underscores the projector’s design focus on convenience and integration within modern home environments.

To complement its visual capabilities, The Premiere 8K features Samsung’s Sound-on-Screen technology. This system aligns the audio with the displayed image, creating an immersive soundstage. Equipped with a 100W sound system, the projector delivers rich and dynamic audio, enhancing the overall home theater experience.

Enhancements Over the Samsung Premiere 4K

Samsung’s earlier release, The Premiere 4K is an award-winning ultra short throw projection. However, the new 8K model introduces significant improvements. The resolution increase provides sharper, more detailed images, and the inclusion of wireless 8K connectivity streamlines the setup process. The 8K model also boasts higher brightness levels, improved HDR performance, and enhanced sound systems.

These upgrades should help The Premiere 8K perform better in a range of environments and deliver a more immersive experience for viewers. While The Premiere 4K remains a strong option, the 8K model is a clear step forward in terms of both technology and user experience.

Samsung will display the new model at CES 2025, and we look forward to seeing the unit in person. While the jury is still out on whether there is a visual benefit to 8K resolution at normal viewing distances, the Samsung Premiere 8K does represent a significant advancement in home projection technology.
