The Optoma UHD35 is a True 4K, or as Optoma describes it, a (1920 x 1080) X4 Cinema Gaming projector claiming 3,600 Lumens. It exceeded its specification by just a little and came in at a respectable 3,670 Lumens in Bright Mode when projecting at full wide-angle. The UHD35 projector is an excellent choice for a home theater or bedroom, where there’s at least some control over ambient light. This is not a projector that needs total darkness to shine. This is a $1,299.99 DLP projector, designed for gaming and featuring a low input lag.

The Optoma UHD35 has a claimed input lag of just 4.2ms! Typical acceptable lag times range from 16ms to 50ms, with 50ms, or a little bit higher, being acceptable to all but the most hardcore, high-speed gamers. 33ms to 40ms is pretty good. If you’re a serious gamer, you’ll want to turn on Enhanced Gaming before starting up your gaming session to get that 4.2ms lag.

Optoma has once again produced an excellent cinema gaming projector at an amazing price for the features and performance. Next-Gen console gamers can take advantage of this projector’s 120Hz refresh rate at 1080P, and PC Gamers have the option of a refresh rate up to 240Hz. I found that Optoma improved the out-of-the-box colors regarding oversaturation enough to see the difference. Even though color tuning is more toward the vivid range, colors are incredibly balanced. Optoma’s out-of-the-box color balance is nice, but with just a little tweaking, the Optoma UHD35 is capable of better color accuracy. To get the best results, have a professional color calibration performed, which will improve the picture accuracy even more.

Bottom line is that the Optoma UHD35 is an excellent combination of features and performance at an amazing $1,299 MSRP, even going for around $1,100 at some retailers. I would have no problem recommending the UHD35 as an excellent choice for someone looking for a 4K projector in this price range. In fact, I just did.

Although gaming projectors aren't a new category, they’ve been largely relegated to 720P and lower resolution. Recently, with advances in light source quality, low input lag, and a new generation of higher resolution image chips, this is changing dramatically.

As consumer choice is growing in this category, competition from companies like BenQ and Epson are going to be applying some pressure on Optoma.
