NEC has developed an ultra short throw projector with lots of bells and whistles and from having had a chance to review this projector extensively, I have to say it is impressive. The NEC U310W features 3100 lumens of light output. The NEC U310W is a DLP projector with a native resolution of 1280x800; it is very compatible in terms of resolution with laptop computers sold today. With a street price of about $1500 dollars, this ultra short throw projector also comes with or without a wall mount. Let's not forget that the U310W is also 3D ready so all you need is the 3D glasses, and you are ready to enjoy the latest educational material. As of this writing, you get free 3D glasses after you register your new projector. Just a note that the NEC U310W only supports analog 3D content. There is no support for Blu-ray at this time. This projector also is interactive in conjunction with the IPad. I will talk more about that in the Physical Tour section of this review.
The U310W weighs about 14 pounds, but mounts easily should you purchase the version that comes with a mount. The mount is very robust, and the adjust-ability makes it very versatile when trying to achieve just the right image size. The ultra short throw aspect of the projector means you can produce a very large image by moving the projector just a matter of inches. This means less shadow from the projector when interacting with the whiteboard. It is my recommendation to get the mount that the projector was designed for. It will save you time and money in the long run unless you plan to move the projector a lot and or will be projecting from a table.
The NEC U310W boasts a full featured input panel with inputs for just about any type of signal you can throw at it. It accepts component video via the VGA input 2 and there is a HDMI port. Also there are inputs for RCA, S-video, and just standard VGA from your laptop via 15 pin input. This projector also has monitor out. You can control the projector in a number of ways. You can use RS-232, IR, Wired LAN and, USB. Also, last but not least, the U310W is interactive and you can control all the projectors menu functions via your computer using special software.
