Home cinema entertainment brand JMGO is launching the U2, an affordable ultra-short throw HD 4K tri-color laser projector designed to create a vivid home theatre experience.
With a tri-chroma laser engine, the U2 delivers sharp, bright, and vivid images that covers 114% BT2020 color gamut, which means the projector can reproduce colors that a consumer flat-panel TV just cannot. JMGO claims it even outperforms an IMAX theater.
The DLP chip utilizing XPR technology delivers a crisp 4K image with good focus uniformity on a 100” display. The U2 projector has a dynamic contrast ratio of 15000:1 and a rated brightness of 2400 ANSI Lumens. Depending on the picture mode utilized, the laser light source has a claimed lifespan of 50,000 hours.
The U2 is an ultra-short-throw projector with a 0.25:1 throw ratio so the U2 can be placed in the front of the room and very close to the wall/screen. For example, to project a 100” image the U2 only has to be 9.4 inches from the wall/screen.
The U2 is available as a standalone unit for $2,099 USD on the Indiegogo platform. The Indiegogo site lists that the unit will begin shipping on September 24th for the first 100 units. The rest of the pre-orders will ship in October.
For maximum performance, JMGO recommends pairing the U2 with an ambient light rejecting (ALR) screen, and they are offering a bundle package of the projector and a 100” fixed ALR screen for $2,628 USD. The screen is also available separately for $529.
“Compared to televisions, there are many benefits to laser projectors, such as improved sound quality, larger screen size, and 3D,” says Will Wang, Chief Product Officer of JMGO. “This year we've been striving to diversify our product portfolio for our international markets to introduce an affordable luxury lifestyle, so that more people can enjoy the benefits of laser projectors. We're dedicated to creating the most premium viewing and audio experience at a competitive price point.”
JMGO aspires to create the most ergonomically-friendly environment for viewing and, as such, recommends an 11.81” high console and 100" screen fixed focus. The key benefit of fixed focus is the premium focus uniformity when the screen size is 100". From 13 feet away, this screen size mitigates eye strain. Additional smart features include Eye Protection Mode and a laser source preset to generate low blue light. Alignment tools are pre-installed for effortlessly reorienting the projector in case the machine is shifted.
The U2 also offers surround sound powered by 2 x 15w full-range speakers and 2 x 10w tweeter speakers co-created DYNAUDIO who is a leading Danish loudspeaker manufacturer. The U2 utilizes Omnidirectional Stereo Compensation Technology to create an immersive surround sound experience and it has earned U2 dual certification from Dolby and DTS.
The U2 utilizes JMGO’s built-in Luna OS which is an Android-based smart TV system. Users can enjoy the pre-loaded mainstream video streaming apps or the U2 includes two HDMI inputs (1 with HDMI ARC), Optical input along with two USB ports so there are ample connections for sources like an Amazon Fire Stick, Roku, Chromecast, cable TV boxes or video game consoles. The U2 features Bluetooth 4.0, Airplay, and wireless casting from a mobile device.
“With U2, a high-end viewing experience awaits viewers’ exploration,” continued Wang. “Our aim is for people to feel instantly immersed into a fantastic world of multimedia, 4K movies, 3D films, sports events and more.”
Other features of the U2 include auto brightness adjustment, wireless casting, and smart temperature control which incorporates five built-in cooling fans that are extremely quiet emitting less than 28dB of audible noise, according to the manufacturer. The laser projector includes a one-year warranty along with a 30-day free return policy.
With an advertised price of $2099, the U2 is the least expensive Laser TV equipped with a Tri-Color laser light source. On paper, the U2 looks like an amazing value and we look forward to testing our review sample as soon as it arrives.
