The Formovie Xming Page One LCD projector is available online from Formovie, Amazon, and other authorized dealers for an MSRP of $499 and can often be found selling for less.
PROS
CONS
According to Presdence Research's September 2024 report, the portable projection market is hot right now, with the category posting some impressive numbers in 2023 and 2024, and remarkable growth is expected over the next ten years. Globally, the portable projector market was valued at 1.74 billion dollars in 2023 and is expected to grow to 1.86 billion in 2024. Even more impressive is the portable projector market, estimated to almost double its size over the next ten years to 3.6 billion dollars. Closer to home, North America has the highest market share in the category, making up 34% of portable projector sales, with an estimated 590 million units sold in 2023.
The rising demand for portable, easy-to-use products is boosting the demand for portable projectors. In addition, an increasing demand evidenced by the younger population's attraction to portable projectors for gaming and entertainment is a significant reason for the category's growth. Combining this with the category's advancements in key electronic devices and leading technology player's heavy investments in portable and cost-efficient products gives us a good idea of what contributes to the rising global demand for these products.
Projectors with fully integrated Google TV OS offer a more seamless and convenient streaming experience than portable projectors without it. In 2024, surprisingly, few portable projectors offer an integrated Android or Google TV OS experience, and almost none offer a certified Netflix application.
The Formovie Xming Page One is fully integrated with Google TV, providing access to a vast library of over 10,000 streaming applications, including more streaming media, productivity, and even gaming apps than any other projector OS platform.
Features like voice control make navigation of the projector's menus and applications easy with personalized recommendations based on the user viewing habits across your most commonly used applications. Offering a fully integrated Google TV OS experience eliminates the need for additional streaming devices, simplifying setup and providing a more streamlined user experience.
Projectors built on Google TV benefit from regular software updates, ensuring you have access to the latest features and security enhancements. What this means is your projector works better and offers you a more secure online experience, providing more peace of mind about the safety and privacy of your information.
The Google TV interface is optimized for the big screen, delivering a smooth and responsive experience. As Google TV continues to evolve, you may also benefit from future integrations with other smart home devices and services.
While portable projectors without Google TV can sometimes be slightly more affordable and offer features like built-in batteries, they often require third-party app markets and software workarounds. Frequently, even if a third-party app market provides a specific application you want, like Netflix, you won’t know if it will work until you take the time to download and run it. And even if it installs and runs, it can have limited features and performance, like low-resolution streaming or lack of HDR compatibility. Third-party app markets and application sideloading often come with complications and less-than-desirable results.
Ultimately, the best choice depends on your priorities. If a seamless streaming experience, ease of use, and access to a wide range of compatible apps are priorities, a projector like the Formovie Xming Page One with a fully integrated Google TV OS is an excellent option.
One of the biggest advantages of the Formovie Xming Page One is an excellent plug-and-play experience when setting up the projector. The Xming Page One offers a range of auto setup modes, including the AUTO KEYSTONE CORRECTION feature, perfectly aligning the projected image in 6 seconds or less, regardless of the projector's placement. In addition, the AUTO FOCUS feature delivers sharp visuals instantly. The Xming Page One even uses an advanced AI algorithm that identifies and avoids obstacles in the room, providing the perfect image tailored to your space for an uninterrupted viewing experience.
The Xming Page One can offer these simple-to-use yet powerful features because the company has integrated a range of highly sensitive screen sensors that can constantly monitor the displayed image in real time, correcting for bumps either moderately or significantly changing the projector position in relation to the screen.
Formovie continues the company's history of collaboration with Boston Acoustics on Xming Page One’s built-in sound system. The projector features a 5-watt x2 stereo sound system that produces dynamic audio that surprisingly seems to defy the projector's small form factor. The projector's stereo speakers deliver a sound that can get very loud with minimal added distortion, providing a surprisingly cinematic audio experience that complements the projected image. This Boston Acoustics audio system produces effective mid-bass, clear dialogue, and detailed highs. Whether you're watching a movie, playing a game, or streaming your favorite show, the Boston Acoustics sound system ensures an audio experience that matches the quality of the picture.
Another advantage offered by Formovie in the Xming line of projectors is the inclusion of the latest hardware with this portable projector offering advanced specifications like HDMI 2.1, providing users full compatibility with modern gaming consoles and computers, allowing the projector to accept up to a 4K 60 Hz signal and display it at Full HD. Even though Page One is not a 4K UHD projector, typically, you can see a difference in the smoothness of the onscreen gameplay when running at a higher refresh rate signal into the projector.
Formovie has also provided a modern Bluetooth 5.0 connection that allows the Page One to function as an external Bluetooth speaker so you can play music from any compatible device, like a phone or tablet. The Bluetooth feature also connects the projector to an external Bluetooth audio device like headphones, receivers, or speakers. The Bluetooth 5.0 specification means you have the best chance of eliminating any delay or distortion that can occur when connecting via older Bluetooth standards. The Xming Page One also features a dual-band WiFi connection, providing 2.4 and 5 GHz connectivity.
Formovie sells two projectors on the Xming line, Page One and Episode One. Check out the detailed comparison in the chart below for more specifics.
The Formovie Xming Page One is a fairly small portable projector that measures (WxHxD) 5 x 8.16 x 7.5 inches (127.4 x 207.4 x 190.5 mm) and weighs 4.5 lbs (2.07 Kg). The projector has no adjustable feet, just rubber strips on the bottom, and no built-in kickstand for tilting, which it should have. As it turns out, Xming makes an optional tilt stand that, as of the writing of this review and for a temporary period, is being given away as a promotional item. Formovie did not include this normally optional stand (that should be part of the projector) for this evaluation.
The front of the chassis is the Lens and IR receiver. There is also a camera that the projector uses for auto-keystone correction and focus, along with a Smart eye protection sensor. Looking at the back of the Formovie Xming Page One, you will find one HDMI 2.1, allowing you to connect up to a 4K 60 source. There is also a Type-A USB input that, unfortunately, is only USB 2.0 for connecting a range of compatible USB devices, external media, keyboard, and even a camera. Lastly, there is a headphone jack and a USB service port.
The Formovie Xming Page One features a fixed lens and can project an image between 40 and 120 inches diagonally. To project a 120-inch image, the projector must be positioned ten (10) feet from the screen. The projected image looks sharp with no significant chromatic aberration or artifacts due to the lens until you get about 85% from the center of the screen, which is excellent for a portable projector in this unit's class and price.
The projector also supports smart setup features like automatic keystone correction and autofocus, significantly simplifying setup. These features automatically adjust the image geometry and focus, ensuring a clear and properly aligned picture even if the projector isn't perfectly positioned. This minimizes manual adjustments and makes achieving a great picture quickly easy.
Formovie’s AUTOMATIC CORRECTION & FOCUS technology does an excellent job simplifying setup within its limits. The larger the screen size you are projecting, basically anything over 100 inches in my testing, the less accurate the projector's AUTO KEYSTONE correction features tend to be. Screen size had little impact on the projector's AUTO FOCUS feature.
The projector includes a typical Google TV-style remote control with a D-Pad for navigation and a center “enter” button. The remote also contains two shortcuts for the Netflix and YouTube applications.
The Cosmos 4K SE projector features a fixed lens with a 1.2:1 throw ratio. It also has quick autofocus and keystone correction, ensuring hassle-free setup and optimal image quality. The lens displayed excellent clarity, solid corner-to-corner focus, and no visible chromatic aberration. The lens on this projector produces an outstanding image.
With its autofocus capability, users can usually achieve a clear and sharp image without manual adjustments. These AUTO features are part of the Cosmos 4K SE Intelligent Environment Adaptation 4.0 (IEA4) technology, a cool tech piece. IEA4 technology enhances the projection experience by automating several critical adjustments. It detects objects in the projection path and adjusts the image size and position to avoid obstructions, ensuring uninterrupted viewing.
Additionally, IEA4 corrects image distortion caused by angled projection, maintaining a rectangular image shape and eliminating manual adjustments. The technology also quickly and accurately adjusts lens focus to ensure a sharp and clear image across the entire screen, making it ideal for projectors used in multiple locations. Finally, it automatically sizes and positions the image to fit perfectly within the screen boundaries, providing a professional-looking setup.
The Formovie Xming Page One features a well-organized and intuitive Google TV OS menu system that is easy to navigate and offers a robust range of features accessible via the projector's menus. Google TV OS includes full access to the Google Play app store, image adjustments, sound adjustments, and more.
Google TV OS boasts a user-friendly interface that simplifies the streaming experience. Its standout features include a comprehensive content discovery platform that unifies movies and shows from various streaming services, eliminating the need to navigate individual apps.
Voice search capabilities allow for effortless content discovery and control. At the same time, the integrated Google Assistant enables seamless smart home integration. The platform also supports personalized profiles for each family member, ensuring tailored recommendations and viewing experiences.
Formovie has included an amazing array of features normally not found on a portable projector, including the ability to adjust all aspects of the projector's image, from geometric correction and focus to picture quality and sound. Formovie has also included the ability to adjust the projected image using a color management system and 11-point gamma adjustment, normally found on much more expensive projectors.
All these features are fantastic but are underserved by the projector's sluggish menu performance. Navigating the Google TV OS can sometimes be choppy.
The screen used for testing in this review is a Da-Lite 110-inch, 16:9 aspect ratio Tensioned Designer Contour Electrol screen system using the company's ultra-white HD Progressive 1.1 screen surface designed for high-resolution video up to 16K.
The Tensioned Designer Contour Electrol screen system is excellent for use in environments where a traditional behind-wall installation is difficult. It offers all the benefits of an electric screen but with the flexibility of wire-free installation. The screen has a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery-powered motor that Da-Lite calls Agility.
The Formovie Xming Page One has six preset picture modes for both SDR and HDR content. These are USER, STANDARD, VIVID, SPORT, MOVIE and GAME. All the color modes run toward blue to one degree or another on this projector. The STANDARD and GAME modes were the best for watching movies and television content, followed by the MOVIE mode.
The color saturation of MOVIE mode was not as good as STANDARD and GAME.
I don’t know if it is a requirement of Google or just always included with the type of chipset Formovie chose for this line of projectors. Still, Page One offers a very robust Color Management System (CMS) and 11-Point GAMMA adjustment.
Formovie lists the Xming Page One brightness at 500 CVIA or 300 ANSI lumens. Currently, we measure projector brightness in ANSI lumens here at Projector Reviews. Out of the projector preset picture modes, the VIVID mode was the brightest, measuring 324 ANSI lumens, which was 24 lumens brighter than the manufacturer's brightness rating. The projector works best when used on screens below 100-inches snd in rooms with no uncontrolled ambient light sources.
Formovie Xming Page One Brightness Measurements | |
---|---|
Picture Mode | Brightness Measured (ANSI Lumens) |
User | 324 ANSI Lumens |
Standard | 319 ANSI Lumens |
Vivid | 324 ANSI Lumens |
Sport | 320 ANSI Lumens |
Movie | 289 ANSI Lumens |
Game | 290 ANSI Lumens |
The Xming Page One’s relatively low brightness hurts this projector when viewing darker content I strongly recommend you turn up the projector’s GAMMA or BLACK LEVEL settings. As you can see in the slideshow below with both the shot from The Last Jedi and Encanto I've adjusted the black level on slide 2 and the GAMMA settings on slide 5 achieving more detail but at the cost of raising the projectors displayed black level. This will cause the blacks in the projector to become even more gray, but it will expose more details in the darker areas of the displayed image.
It’s not a hard rule, but typically, HDR10's benefits are often diminished for low-lumen projectors. Most HDR content is mastered with the idea that it will be displayed on a device capable of displaying an image in the 1000 nits range. For dimmer projectors, tone mapping can pick up some slack for lower brightness. The Formovie Xming Page One is not a bright projector and does not offer the tone-mapping performance you would typically find in a more expensive projector. This projector performs better in displaying SDR content. Sometimes, HDR content can look worse than SDR, particularly regarding black-level performance.
I don’t like that you can’t turn off HDR when viewing content through the projector's built-in Google TV OS. I was forced to switch to an external device to turn off the HDR and do a comparison.
The Formovie Xming Page One projector boasts several smart features that enhance its usability and entertainment value. It runs on the latest Google TV OS, a significant upgrade to the older Android TV. Google TV provides access to a vast library of over 10,000 applications, including streaming apps like Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, and many others directly on the projector. This eliminates the need for separate streaming devices in most cases, simplifying setup and reducing clutter. The Google TV interface is user-friendly and will appear familiar to anyone with any Android device experience.
Google TV makes navigation and content discovery straightforward. Google Assistant is also integrated, enabling voice control for searching content, adjusting settings, and even controlling other smart home devices. This hands-free control adds convenience and a modern touch. Built-in Chromecast functionality allows for easy wireless screen mirroring from smartphones, tablets, and laptops, making sharing photos, videos, and presentations on the big screen simple. This is particularly useful for casual sharing or impromptu gatherings.
Not everything is perfect. The projector's UI and application navigation can sometimes feel sluggish and choppy, especially if you try to move quickly through a menu. If anything is going on in the background, like an app update, this will also negatively impact menu navigation. On the plus side, I did not experience any application crashes or unwanted restarts. One of the biggest benefits of Google TV is access to the Google Play store and the almost ubiquitous compatibility of all the applications found there. This is a marked improvement over projectors that don’t support Google TV and require the use of a third-party app store.
I had no issue casting content from YouTube or YouTube Music. I was also able to cast from multiple applications like Netflix and others. The projector does not natively support AirPlay or AirPlay2, but there is a wide range of applications that you can download from the Google Play store that will allow you to cast via AirPlay if you wish.
This projector's compact and portable design and smart features make it a versatile entertainment solution suitable for various settings, from home movie nights to on-the-go viewing.
Sound quality is one of the biggest perks of the Formovie Xming Page One. The projector offers excellent sound quality, producing sound that rivals larger and more expensive projectors. Page One only shows its flaws when the volume is turned up around the maximum level where it starts to distort. The built-in stereo speakers produce clear dialogue and sound effects, particularly in the mid and high ranges, and they can reach a reasonable volume level suitable for small to medium-sized rooms.
Dolby Audio support further enhances the audio experience with virtual surround sound effects. Page One offers Dolby Audio Processing sound presets that can be found in the projector's SOUND menu. There are seven sound modes. The seventh mode is listed as CUSTOM, but there is no way to adjust any EQ, so I don’t see how it’s custom.
However, the biggest weakness is the limited bass response, meaning deep sounds lack impact. Still, the speakers create a surprisingly wide and immersive soundstage. This level of sound performance is acceptable for casual viewing and watching movies or TV shows in smaller spaces without external speakers.
The Xming Page One does offer support for Audio Return Channel (ARC) functionality. If you want a more cinematic or immersive audio experience, especially for action movies or music with strong bass, consider connecting the projector to ARC-capable external audio like a soundbar or receiver.
Overall, this projector produces clear sound with minimal distortion except for maximum volume and balanced highs and mids, with only the projector's bass performance being a drawback.
The Formovie Xming Page One is a compact, portable projector offering a compelling blend of features and value. The projector displays a sharp 1080p image that is perfect for the kid's room, your bedroom, or for use on the go at a friend's house for movies and gaming.
The fully integrated Google TV operating system provides easy access to over 10,000 applications in the Google Play store, including a certified Netflix application that offers the best streamer in a portable application that works flawlessly. The Xming Page One is smart enough to make content recommendations across various applications, not just one.
To simplify setup, the projector uses AI to automatically square and focus the projected image. Page One can even detect objects in the way and frame an unobstructed image. It will even correct the displayed image geometry and automatically refocus should something bump the projector out of position.
The Xming Page One also offers a surprisingly good sound that offers clear mids and highs and an amazing soundstage enhanced by Dolby Audio processing. However, its limitations do include a less-than-impressive bass response. To help with this, Formovie has included ARC, Bluetooth, and analog audio connections, allowing the projector to be connected to an external audio source easily.
The Xming Page One delivers a solid Full HD viewing experience for its price, making it a good choice for casual movie watching, gaming, and presentations where portability and ease of use are prioritized. It's a great all-in-one solution for those seeking a convenient and affordable projector, but those demanding top-tier audio and brightness should consider higher-end options.
